Well, there isn't any good way to say this, but to just say it.
After the hospital stay for diverticulitis and kidney infection, I was hospitalized- AGAIN- for an infection in the tendons of my index finger of my dominant hand. They had to cut open that finger and clean out the infection. When cultures did not reveal what caused that infection, my primary healthcare provider sent me to an Immunologist.
I've been doing some medical testing over the last month; testing that we've never done before.... and we found something.
The Immunologist ran a gamut of tests to see what was going on with my body, and he found something he had never seen before.
I've been to a Hematologist and an Oncologist, and the short of it is:
I don't have enough symptoms to validate the suspicions of the Immunologist;
I don't have cancer at this time;
and I'm in no need of extraordinary treatment until secondary symptoms arise.
This is an abnormality within the blood; it handicaps the immune system; and unfortunately it can look like cancer or a very rare disease that has a dire prognosis; and there isn't a test to determine which it is.
Without the secondary symptoms, we are operating under the belief this is benign... non-malignant, and NOT the blood disorder.
In addition to the 'big find,' the Immunologist is running more tests on various anomalies and abnormalities he found within my immune system-even down to the cellular level. There are treatments he can offer to help me, but we need to determine what that help should be.
My goals are to do everything possible to strengthen my body and my immune system. Regardless what this turns into, I will weather the coming challenges much better, with a body that is as strong as it can get.
I'm being forced, once again, to triage my life; take a hard look at what I can do and what I should not do....
At this time, I'm forced to relinquish Hooks In Texas. The physical stress is too big of a risk for me. For as much as I love seeing stitchers from across our great state, the responsibility is too much for me, anymore. The only clever words I can find are the Title words of the last episode of M.A.S.H.
I'm keeping ChezCrochet.com online, since it is self sustaining, but everything else will need to be evaluated over the next few weeks.
For now, I'm done with the doctor visits for a couple of months, and that tells me I'm in no grave danger. I can focus on the positives in my life, and hopefully, get back to stitching soon. Oh, did I mention, I've been doing physical therapy on the hand scattered all through this. All this emotional turmoil, and I couldn't stitch... let me tell you folks... that was a challenge.
oh, NO, I'm not going to say the names of the diseases... what little you will find on google, will just scare you half to death.

It was such a rewarding year working on Hooks In Texas. I had 3 volunteers to help me with the work load of taking our conference to the next level: a hotel- so everything was in one building; a vendor’s room; more classes, and a People’s Choice contest- with nice prizes. We were all excited at how this was shaping up to be an amazing weekend.
The Transition Phase of the hotel changing owners wreaked havoc with our efforts: changing dates, elements of our contracts couldn’t be honored, delays upon delays upon delays... and of course, my health. Then, our last visit to the hotel brought new revelations- the renovations and retro-fits, were moving much slower than anticipated.
Our registration deadlines have passed, we don’t have enough people to cover the larger expenses of being in the hotel. We’ve run the numbers, discussed options to trim our costs, but words cannot express my trepidations over those incomplete renovations- with our conference so close at hand.
It is with a heavy heart, that I’m canceling this year’s Hooks In Texas.
There are just too many things working against us this year: health problems (including family) for many of our ladies across the state- I wasn't the only one. Scheduling conflicts with the new date, and larger conferences that same weekend. Everyone is struggling with the economy, even the larger needlework conferences have significant decreases in their attendees. As the days have progressed, I see national uncertainty over the looming election... and here locally, my uncertainty of those incomplete renovations at the hotel.
I want to thank the ladies who helped me: Beverly Wildes, Kim Guzman, and Cyndye Scott Batchelor, their efforts have been invaluable this year.
And to answer your question before asked: We are NOT giving up. We are regrouping; building on what we accomplished this year, and learning from the pitfalls. We have a whole year to make Hooks In Texas 2013, something to look forward to.

We are doing some advertising at Facebook and Ravelry, and I wanted to provide a quick Map for finding all the information you need to know.
First of all:
There is a $40 Registration Fee for the Weekend.
If you miss the August 31, Registration Deadline, the Fee goes up to $50. You can still walk-in, but we can't promise what classes will be available.
Classes are $10 each, for 2 hours of instruction, and some have an extra supply fee.
We have added a People’s Choice Awards Contest, this year!

Saturday Evening Supper!
The new hotel owner, refused to let us bring in an outside caterer for Saturday evening's buffet; Clarion demands that you use their In House Caterer. After reviewing the hotel's In House Catering Menu, the executive commitee decided we would just go somewhere else for Saturday Supper.
We are okay to bring in Saturday Lunch from other caterers, but not a full fledged buffet. Soup, Salad, and Breadsticks from Olive Garden is still the menu for Saturday Lunch.
After much gnashing of teeth, wringing of hands, cauliflower ear from talking to local restaurants....
We will be dining at Feuntes Down Town on Saturday Evening. They are a medium sized restaurant with a comfortable ambience, and they are a San Angelo Landmark eatery for more than 50 years.
They offer a full bar, which some of our other choices did not, but we are asking each vehicle choose a designated driver.

At present, we will be ordering off the menu, and everyone will pay their tab separately. If our numbers climb past certain point, we will need to establish a selective menu for our group.

I Cord Methods and Machines
I Cord is a method of making a stronger ‘cord’ than just ‘string or twine.’ In ancient history, they would use this cord to tie anything, sew it onto their clothing as decoration, or use it to keep their clothing ‘closed.’
I wanted folks to see ALL of the things you will learn in this class, and you will be given an opportunity to work with each of these tools to get a feel for them.
Bond America Embellish Knit
With this machine, you can create yards and yards of I Cord in just minutes.
Clover Wonder Knitter
Since this is more hands on, you can add beads to your work as you stitch. This also lets you use those big chunky yarns to make big chunky cords.
Peg Knitters/Knitting Nancy’s
I will have several different Peg Knitters for you to try, including The Crochet Dude’s newest addition to this ancient tool.
Lucet
Lucet is an ancient forked tool that has been found in Viking and other medieval archeological digs.
How to make I Cord with 2 Crochet hooks (or two double pointed knitting needles)
I’ve seen this on YouTube, but she used only one hook, and you had to remove the loops from the hook to work each round. We all know if you remove the loops from your hook/needle you risk losing a loop while working the rest. I’ve modified the technique, so that those loops never leave the hook/needle.
To finish up the class, we will look at what to do with this I Cord once you made it!
Such as running a second yarn or ribbon down the middle...
Pulling the cord over beaded garland
Or treating the I Cord like any other ‘string.’

Hooks In Texas 2012 Peoples' Choice Awards
We are adding a new event to our conference this year, a People’s Choice Award for projects attendees have crocheted.
There are 4 Categories:
Fashion:
Includes clothing, purses, bags, caps, hats, scarves, jewelry, doggy sweaters, etc.
Solid Flat Pieces:
Includes afghans, blankets, warm shawls, table runners,
Lace:
Flat Lace only- including doilies, table cloths, shawls, scarves
Scraps and Orphans:
This is for any project that uses scraps or one skein of yarn/thread, Items include baby booties, slippers, stuffed animals or other three dimensional figures, fingerless mitts, scrapghans, holiday decorations, place mats, coasters, hot pads.
Entry Requirements:
1. Entries must be your own crochet work.
2. Any Crocheted item is acceptable. Bring Any Project, that you are proud of.
3. This can be a New project OR one completed in the past.
4. If you aren't sure which category your project should be, the judges will determine what category it fits in.
8. If you can, please identify which publication the pattern came from, or who the designer was.
We will have cards for you to fill out to identify your piece.
During Saturday's lunch break, you will be given a Voting Card. Walk through the entries and choose your favorite from each category. You will vote for only 1 project in each category.
There are prizes for the top three winners of each category, plus a Best of Show prize for the one project that receives the most votes.
The First Place Winners of each category will receive: a quilted project bag, two project books appropriate for the category, and other goodies. Each of these prizes is valued at $50 retail.
The Second and Third place winners in each category will receive a Project Bag with goodies and fun things.
The Best of Show winner.... will receive a large project bag filled with lots of Crochet goodies, that I’m still adding to, so it will be a really nice prize.

HOOKS IN TEXAS 2012 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Drop Spindle Spinning: Mary Page is back to explain and demonstrate the entire process of taking raw wool and turning it into yarn - by hand. You will learn about yarn weights, different types of fibers, and hands on use of a Drop Spindle.
Class Fee is $10
Supply fee is $10 for roving.
If you don’t have a drop spindle, Mary will have kits, that take only a few minutes to assemble.
You can purchase these from her before class for $5.
Crocheting with Roving: Vanessa Emmons, local alpaca rancher, is offering a class on how to crochet from Roving, which is unspun fiber. Yes, wool roving can be utilized to make items like hats and scarves. No skills are needed other than basic crochet stitches. These techniques will transfer well to the commercially prepared yarns that are ‘unspun.’
Class Fee is $10
Supply Fee: TBA, $10-$15, based on the market, and you will pay this at the conference.
I Cord Methods and Machines: ARNie is offering an interactive class on the numerous methods and tools that can be used to make I Cord, plus tips and tricks in using Caron’s Embellish Knit, a variety of Peg Knitter/Spool Knitters, and Clover’s Wonder Knitter. Students will get the opportunity to work with all these ‘gadgets’; in a Try before You Buy opportunity.
Also included in this class is two different I Cord methods: using Two Crochet Hooks (or dpns, if you prefer) and with an ancient tool known as a Lucet.
Class Fee is $10
Students should bring several balls of scrap yarn, and two hooks the same size, or two double pointed knitting needles.
Lucets will be available as loaners and to purchase.
Knooking: How to Knit with a Crochet Hook. Kim will teach how to use this specially-designed crochet hook that creates a knitted fabric. Take your crochet skills to a new level by learning to knit using a tool we are more familiar with.
A scarf pattern is provided.
Class Fee is $10
Supply Fee: TBA- $5 - $10 We are negotiating with the company to provide the Knooking Kit at a reduced price, and will be available to purchase at the conference.
Students should bring one skein worsted weight yarn.
Learn to Read Tunisian Crochet Symbols: With the interest in symbols, especially with the many available books from Japan, Kim will teach students how to read and use the symbols like a pro.
Kim's Symbol Directory and a free pattern to get you started will be provided.
Class Fee is $10
Bring one skein of yarn, and an appropriate sized Tunisian Crochet Hook.
(Loaner hooks will be available.)
Reversible Ripples: Kim will teach some classic crochet techniques that create beautiful unique projects with patterning on one side and a traditional ripple on the other. Add to your stitch mastery for those charitable projects or holiday gifts. A free pattern provided.
Class Fee is $10
Bring scrap yarn and an appropriate sized crochet hook.
Stone Soup Scrap Scarf:
Cyndye Scott Batchelor has a crochet pattern that fits the Traditional story well. Students should bring scrap balls of yarn to put into the pot, and everyone will draw from this pot to crochet their Scarf. This is an exploration of yarn and texture, so don’t be limited to typical yarns like Red Heart or Simply Soft. Bring those balls of novelty and textured yarn to add more depth and flavor to your Stone Soup Scarf.
Class Fee is $10
Students should bring several balls of scrap yarn with different textures and weights and an I hook.
Stone Soup, is the story of a traveler who was hungry, but no one in the village would share a meal with him. He built a fire, set up his pot and dropped rocks and water inside. When folks asked, he replied, I’m making Stone Soup, but a carrot, potato, onion, and a bit of meat would make it much better, oh even a clove of garlic, some basil, oregano, rosemary... those would add more flavor, too. Everyone brought something from their cupboard to put inside the pot, and they all enjoyed a wonderful bowl of soup.
Kumihimo: Judy Voce, from Abilene, is a newcomer to our conference and we are excited that she has another way for us to use up our stash. She will be teaching this Japanese art of Braiding, and students will make a bracelet in class. All supplies are provided by Yarnies, the LYS in Abilene.
Class Fee is $10
$10 supply Fee- includes yarn and the braiding template card.
Lace: Intimidating, But Not Difficult. ARNie will offer a brief presentation on making lace shawls with ease, that look stunning, but are so easy to create. This presentation is free of charge, so bring paper and pencil to take notes.

Holiday Inn San Angelo Convention Center. San Angelos only full service inside corridor hotel. Located downtown and adjacent to the San Angelo Convention Center we are also within walking distance to Historic Concho Street, Fort Concho, El Paso de Santa Angela and San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

It should have been an easy drive from this hotel to the conference hall... that is... until the city decided to replace/repair the only bridge on that street for miles.
Luckily, there is a back door to this hotel, and our conference hall.

I sent out a mass email, but over the weekend it has come to my attention that some folks didn't get that email.
The Mesquite Bean Grill would have to charge us for 50 people, regardless of the number of people, and that was going to add $2-4 extra, per person. I didn't want to add to the financial burden of those from out of town, so I switched resturants.
We will be eating at RJ's Barbeque and Catering on 1405 North Bryant. This is just a few blocks from Inn of the Conchos, the location of last year's Hooks In Texas.

You can order from the menu, but RJ's sells out of certain menu items, so I ordered extra Brisket and Ribs for our group.

I'm on a completely new vitamin and supplement regimen, as well as a cocktail of hormones... and have more changes to make, but we have to do this in stages.
I am feeling better, but this will take some time. We are addressing all the issues I've been concerned with, and have a solid plan to regain my health.
Consequentially, I've extended all the deadlines for the conference. Feel free to contact me with your class choices and reservations.

I'm excited to announce that we have a new meeting place! We have reserved the entire building of Santa Fe Crossing, the local Senior Citizen's Center. Although it has stairs into the building, it also has a wheel chair ramp.
All of Saturday's classes, and activities will be in this building, and we will be the only people in the building.
I will post photos of Santa Fe Crossing in the future.
Friday: I'm working on a new Field Trip, but haven't finalized plans, yet.
Friday Night Meet and Greet at Mesquite Bean Cafe for a Buffet dinner including: Beef Tips with sauteed mushrooms, onions & au jus, Fried Chicken, Corn, Green Beans, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese.
We will be the only folks in the cafe that night; cost is $12 per person, plus tax.
Saturday:
2 Classes in the Morning- TBA
2 Classes in the Afternoon- TBA
A yarn shopping time in the afternoon with local yarn merchants.
Sorry, but there isn't time or space this year for a full vendor's room, but I'm still hoping we can do this at a future conference.
Sunday has no definitive plans, yet.
Teachers: Vannessa Emmons is returning to teach a crochet class; ARNie will teach another Corner to Corner/Crazy Block variation; Kim Guzman is returning to teach two more classes, but she is finalizing her lessons plans at this time.
Lunch Saturday will include a buffet of finger foods: vegetable and fruit trays, cheese ball trays, chips, cookies, salad greens. There will be roast beef, turkey and ham sandwiches, plus chicken & ham salad sanwiches and pimento cheese sandwiches. Saturday Lunch is included in the Registration Fees.
Tea, Coffee and bottled water will be provided all day- free of charge, but there are soda machines in the building.
Fees:
Registration Fee is the same as last year: $40, and includes Lunch Saturday, but no class fees.
Class Fees are the same as last year: $10 per person, per class, but class fees are not included in the Registration fee.
This means all of your class fees are extra this year, but for most folks, this will increase your fees by only $10 over last year. I'm hoping the vast improvement of the building and class rooms is worth that extra $10.
Deadlines and Payments:
Like last year, please bring your payments with you to the conference, and individuals will be responsible for bringing their payments. The CGOA Presidents will not be collecting the payments from their chapters.
Money Orders and Cash only, NO personal checks, please. With us in a building by ourselves, I won't mind bringing a cash box this year, for those folks who prefer to pay with cash.
Please let your CGOA Chapter president know if you want to come, and if you are interested in Friday's Buffet Dinner.

Friday Night Meet and Greet at Mesquite Bean Cafe for a Buffet dinner including: Beef Tips with sauteed mushrooms, onions & au jus, Fried Chicken, Corn, Green Beans, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese.
We will be the only folks in the cafe that night; cost is $12 per person, plus tax.
Saturday:
2 Classes in the Morning- TBA
2 Classes in the Afternoon- TBA
A yarn shopping time in the afternoon with local yarn merchants.
Sorry, but there isn't time or space this year for a full vendor's room, but I'm still hoping we can do this at a future conference.
Sunday has no definitive plans, yet.
Teachers: Vannessa Emmons is returning to teach a crochet class; ARNie will teach another Corner to Corner/Crazy Block variation; Kim Guzman is returning to teach two more classes, but she is finalizing her lessons plans at this time.
Lunch Saturday will include a buffet of finger foods: vegetable and fruit trays, cheese ball trays, chips, cookies, salad greens. There will be roast beef, turkey and ham sandwiches, plus chicken & ham salad sanwiches and pimento cheese sandwiches. Saturday Lunch is included in the Registration Fees.
Tea, Coffee and bottled water will be provided all day- free of charge, but there are soda machines in the building.
Fees:
Registration Fee is the same as last year: $40, and includes Lunch Saturday, but no class fees.
Class Fees are the same as last year: $10 per person, per class, but class fees are not included in the Registration fee.
This means all of your class fees are extra this year, but for most folks, this will increase your fees by only $10 over last year. I'm hoping the vast improvement of the building and class rooms is worth that extra $10.
Deadlines and Payments:
Like last year, please bring your payments with you to the conference, and individuals will be responsible for bringing their payments. The CGOA Presidents will not be collecting the payments from their chapters.
Money Orders and Cash only, NO personal checks, please. With us in a building by ourselves, I won't mind bringing a cash box this year, for those folks who prefer to pay with cash.
